Moving a Refrigerator

A useful guide to glass door refrigerators.

Moving a refrigerator is never an easy task.  Not only are they extremely heavy, but they are also very bulky which is guaranteed to make any moving job nearly impossible.  That’s why you need to know the right means for moving a fridge safely, otherwise you risk damage to the fridge itself, as well as personal injury.  But moving a refrigerator doesn’t have to be extremely difficult, so long as you know the right way to go about things.  All you have to do is make sure that you’re properly prepared for every scenario, so that you can move your fridge without a problem.

The first thing when it comes to moving a refrigerator, is to ensure that you’re properly prepared, this is very important, as you need to take the appropriate safety precautions beforehand, to ensure that you’re ready to actually move the fridge.  The first thing should be ensuring that everything has been unplugged and disconnected properly.  That means all power cables, and cables relating to your fridge’s water system.  You will also want to completely defrost the freezer, so that you don’t have to worry about moisture or water buildup, while you’re trying to move the fridge.  All trays and food should be removed, and the doors should be secured shut with a bungee cord.

Next, think about where you want to put the fridge, or what you need to move the appliance for.  If you’re simply rearranging your kitchen, and it needs to go somewhere in the same room, you simply have to slide the fridge.  When it comes to moving a refrigerator this way, you will want to slide a rug, or piece of carpeting completely underneath the fridge, so that it can be moved.  This is important, otherwise the bottom of the fridge can really scratch up your floors.   Plus, with the rug underneath, sliding should be much easier, and gentler on your muscles, so that you can move the fridge with ease.

When you need to actually lift the refrigerator, to move it to a different space, you’re going to want to approach the problem differently.  In this scenario, it’s important to properly prepare for lifting, so that you don’t injure yourself in the process.  For that reason you want to either use moving straps, or a cart, so that you can move the fridge easily.  A cart will allow you to roll the fridge anywhere you need, so that it requires minimal effort on your part.  Moving straps will allow you to carry the weight further up on your arms, so that it doesn’t put as large a strain on your body, and you can better stabilize the fridge as you move the device.

When you’re looking for supplies to help in moving a refrigerator, you’ll always want to go to a hardware store in your area.  There you can find rolling carts, moving straps, and bungee cords for securing the fridge properly.  All of these are important, so that you can ensure moving a refrigerator is as safe as possible, and so that you can protect your appliance from damages.
